Sitemap Protocol

A sitemap is a file that lists all the urls you want a search engine to index on your site. A sitemap can just be a text file with the address of a url per line, however, for the purposes of seo, it's probably best to go the extra mile and provide the spiders with a bit more info..

More advanced sitemaps follow the Sitemap Protocol and they are xml files. They not only list the addresses of all the pages that make up the site, but also when a page was last modified, how often it is likely to be modified and also a priority value, to indicate its importance.

Hopefully adopting this standard will go towards helping to increase the rankings a bit! Of course, it goes without saying that gaming the system (i.e. saying pages get updated daily when in actual fact they seldom do) is a bad idea. There must be ways they flag things like that.

Have a look at our sitemapto get a feel for it. Follow the link to get more info about the Sitemap Protocol.
